Growing your own food is a rewarding and easy task and can be accomplished in any size of garden.
The flavour of home grown food is the key benefit. Many foods can even be grown in pots and containers if space is at a premium.
We can help you plan what to grow, when and how to maximise the growing potential of your garden. Our top tips are to start small so you don’t take on too much too soon and to grow food that you like to eat.
When you visit us you can see our own potager garden where we grow herbs and vegetables for our café. We use raised beds to improve the productivity of our patch.
Herbs
All common herbs will grow reliably outdoors (except basil). They are perfect for growing in pots, containers and window boxes or you can easily create a fragrant herb garden close to the back door. Some herbs are annuals, only lasting one growing season like coriander and parsley. Other herbs are long living evergreens like oregano, thyme or rosemary. Herbs are really easy to grow and are ready to use from the get go.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops to grow at home because they are so much tastier than commercial tomatoes – bred to ensure a long shelf life rather than flavour. At home you can grow a variety of tomatoes with diverse sizes, shapes and colours. With our cooler Irish climate, tomatoes grow best in a greenhouse or poly tunnel – or if you have a sunny sheltered corner you can try them in a pot.
Potatoes & Beginner Vegetables
Nothing tastes better than home-grown potatoes with butter and salt. Talk to us about the varieties available – potatoes do great in raised beds, grow bags and pots, perfect for small spaces.
We stock a seasonal range of easy to grow vegetables in plug form. These “starter” plants come in handy pack sizes and are ready to plant straight away. Start with vegetables you both like and are easy to grow – you’ll soon be enjoying healthy, great tasting homegrown produce.
Fruit
Our range of dwarf fruit trees are perfect for pots or small garden spaces – apple and plum trees can bring a bountiful harvest in autumn. Other common garden fruits include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and rhubarb. Strawberries grow well and look terrific in hanging baskets – the flavour and aroma of your own freshly picked berries on a summer day is unbeatable!
Fruit is often easier to grow than vegetables – position in a sunny sheltered spot to maximise your yield.
